It seems that Blockbuster has finally taken hints from services like Gamefly and Netflix, pulling their heads out of the sand with expedient measure to add video games to their “by Mail” service which has sought to mimic services currently provided by the previously mentioned companies.
After spending last year piloting the “Games by Mail” program, it apparently took off with a spiraling success since the company has moved to implement video games into the program across the United States. In an attempt to beat both Netflix and Gamefly to the punch, Blockbuster will be offering both films and games at a common starting point of $8.99. Current members of Blockbuster by Mail will automatically have the video games service added to their accounts for zero cost.
Obviously, Blockbuster is going tooth and nail in an attempt to give Gamefly and Netflix a run for their money. But with such a significant setback in the customer service area as well as the elimination of numerous brick and mortar locations, it begs the question of who out there is really willing to give up a Netflix or Gamefly account for the sake of Blockbuster. But even with the low entry in price, it’s pretty doubtful this will make many a believer out of the uninitiated or those already entrenched with the other services.
The $8.99 price will allow 1 game or movie to be checked out at a time with unlimited rental for a month, which includes Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Playstation 3 and Wii titles.
